55% Of People Diagnosed With Dementia Die Within Five Years

Within a group of more than 100,000 older adults newly diagnosed with dementia, 55.1% died within five years of the diagnosis; 24.4% survived longer than five years and were living in the community; and 20.5% survived longer than five years and were living in a long-term care facility. During the five year span of the study, 48.4% of the group was admitted to a long-term care facility at some point after diagnosis with dementia.
