45% Of American Adults Had Hypertension In 2018
About 45.4% of American adults had hypertension in 2018. The prevalence of hypertension increased with age, ranging from 22.4% among ages 18 to 39; 54.5% among ages 40 to 59; and 74.5% among ages 60 and older. Hypertension prevalence varied by race, and ranged from 43.6% among non-Hispanic whites, 43.7% among Hispanics, and 57.1% among non-Hispanic blacks.
Over time, the prevalence of hypertension has decreased since 2000. The prevalence was 47.0% in 2000, and by 2014 had dropped to 41.7%, but later rose to the current 45.4%.
