27% Of Children In Foster Care In Kinship Placements
Of the total 397,091 children in foster care in the U.S., about 27% (slightly over 108,000 children) are in kinship care placements with a grandparent or other relative, without the child’s parents in the home. Including the children in a formal foster care kinship placement, nearly 2.5 million children in the United States in 2011 through 2013 were being raised by a “grandfamily,” a grandparent or extended family without the child’s parents in the home. Children being raised by grandfamilies represent about three percent of all children in the United States.
