Of Pregnant Women Using Prescription Opioids, 21% Admit Misuse
Of the 7% of pregnant women using prescription opioids, approximately 21.2% report misuse during pregnancy. For the purposes of this study, misuse is defined as getting prescription opioids from a source other than a health care provider or using them for reasons other than pain. Approximately 27.1% of pregnant women using prescription opioids indicated wanting or needing to cut down or stop using. About 31.9% of pregnant women using prescription opioids did not receive counseling from a provider on how prescription opioid use during pregnancy could affect an infant.
