In 2016, 15% Of Medicaid Beneficiaries Were In The Expansion Population & Accounted For 12% Of Total Medicaid Spending
During federal fiscal year (FY) 2016, 76 million people had Medicaid coverage, about 11.2 million (14.5%) were adults eligible under the Medicaid expansion. The Medicaid expansion population accounted for spending of $65.5 billion (11.9%) of the total $550.8 billion in Medicaid spending. Per-person costs for the Medicaid expansion population averaged $5,870, about 19% less than the total for all beneficiaries.
