Genetics & Neuroscience Will Transform Mental Health Treatment Within 10 Years

On May 18, 2010, Thomas Insel, M.D., director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) said recent research advances in genetics and neuroscience will transform mental health treatment, possibly within ten years. Instead of addressing overt symptoms of chronic mental illness and substance abuse disorders, new treatment models will provide early diagnosis of at-risk individuals and interventions at various points of neurodevelopment to prevent the brain changes that result in chronic illness and disability.
