Payer cost pressures and health care reform are pushing the use of performance-based contracting or pay-for-performance (P4P) initiatives – both in reimbursement of health plans and of health service provider organizations. By definition, P4P is a generic term for payment systems that offer financial rewards to the contractor that achieves or exceeds performance standards on specified quality, cost, or other benchmarks.
