CMS Value-Based Purchasing – The Winners Are…
Last year the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) launched its Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) program. After one year, there are two conclusions to be made – the winners and losers are split about 50/50 and the penalties are going up.
First, a quick refresher. On October 1, 2012 CMS launched its Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) program for hospitals in the Medicare program that gave rewards and penalties – 70% of hospital evaluations are based on performance metrics and 30% are based on consumer satisfaction using the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey.
