Here’s a quick question for you – what can destroy executive team efficiency and effectiveness faster than almost anything? The answer is bad team dynamics.
What am I talking about? The right mix of people and personalities on your team. Leadership dynamics are how well team members communicate, how developed their inter-personal skills are, and what kinds of leadership skills they both respond to and possess.
Recently I had a great conversation with Peter Zucker, Ph.D., President of Stars Behavioral Health Group that illustrates this issue. He described the leadership dynamics issue as:
We…have always placed a premium on clinical excellence and operational expertise. In that way, we relied heavily on transactional leadership. As we grew and needed to change our culture to include greater participatory management and focus on team partnership, more transformational leadership was needed.
In a very purposeful manner, I have strived to lead the executive team to assess and reflect upon their key leadership styles, so to appreciate their predominant leadership style, and more importantly develop a greater appreciation for contrasting styles, both within themselves and others on the executive team. Using coaching, humor, guided discussion on key OD articles that we all source and share, along with high levels of honest self-appraisal, as well as occasional retreats, our senior team has developed great respect and appreciation for each members unique leadership style and contribution, as well as greater versatility to draw upon each other’s predominant or auxiliary leadership style as the shifting terrain requires.
We see ourselves as a whole team with specific and different leadership styles, and realize we are a far more effective team as a result.
As Peter illustrates, the leadership dynamics of your team are not a factor to be left to chance. Rather team dynamics are an asset to be honed continually for optimum team effectiveness.
