The U.S. Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities Market: Almost Five Million People With Disabilities & $56 Billion In Annual Spending
In 2011, public spending on intellectual and developmental disability (I/DD) service programs totaled $56.65 billion. Of the total, 61% ($34.38 billion) was spent by the federal government; 36% ($20.66 billion) was spent by state governments; and three percent of the funding ($1.61 billion) was spent by local governments. Medicaid alone accounted for 77% of total I/DD services and support spending.
