A. Introduction
Medicare beneficiaries with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are a medically complex group that requires significantly more resources than the general Medicare population.
In 2016, fewer than 1% of the fee-for-service (FFS) Medicare beneficiary population had ESRD, yet they accounted for about 7% of FFS Medicare spending.3 Beneficiaries with ESRD have more and longer hospitalizations than other beneficiaries and their readmission rates are more than twice the rate of the general Medicare population.
