Virginia-based telemedicine provider Avizia has acquired telemedicine startup Carena. Details as to the terms of the purchase, or the number of Carena employees that will be retained, have not been disclosed.

Avizia anticipates that the deal, which grants it access to Carena’s extensive network, will bolster its presence throughout hospital in the U.S. Avizia currently provides telehealth services to 25 percent of hospitals in the U.S. Prior to the acquisition, the two companies had served as competitors.

Avizia is a telemedicine company that partners with health care providers to design, deploy, and power system-wide telehealth programs. Carena has offered on-demand care since 2000, informing its telemedicine solution with industry expertise in clinical quality and consumer preferences.
