University Of Texas Ends Cancer Collaboration Project With IBM
Citing out-of-control costs, University of Texas's MD Anderson Cancer Center has ended a cancer collaboration project with IBM. The Oncology Expert Advisor (OEA), was intended to apply IBM Watson's analytic capabilities on a system to match cancer and leukemia patients with clinical trials worldwide.
Started in 2012, the project spent $62.1 million without implementation. It has also not been upgraded to support the latest patient record system, meaning OEA cannot be used with current patient data. The project has also faced tender, contract, procurement, and development policy issues.
