Optum and OPEN MINDS announced the launch of the Self-Determination Online Resource Center for Empowerment (SORCe). The online portal (MySORCe.org) was created to provide access to policy and best practices for the design, development, and management of self-directed support services and service systems for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The site launched October 1, 2019.
SORCe offers an intuitive, searchable repository of curated resources organized by categories relevant to a variety of audiences including individuals and families, provider organizations, payers, and government policymakers. Optum, part of UnitedHealth Group®, is a leading information and technology-enabled health services organization that delivers intelligent, integrated solutions to help modernize the health system and improve overall population health. OPEN MINDS is a national strategic advisory firm specializing in providing market intelligence, industry analysis, and management solutions for executives in behavioral health, mental health, and social services.
Self-directed services are a best practice for serving individuals with I/DD because they provide flexibility and individualization that result in higher satisfaction and better quality-of-life outcomes. The evidence in favor of self-determination is strong, and has influenced federal policy and allocation of funds for self-directed services through Medicaid. However, useful tools and policies about how to best implement and access these services are lacking, and what does exist is often scattered and difficult to find. Optum and OPEN MINDS developed SORCe to help close this gap and facilitate the creation and greater utilization of person-centered services and systems that embrace and promote the principles of self-determination.
The SORCe website (MySORCe.org) is hosted on the OPEN MINDS network of online communities and is free to the public, courtesy of the Optum SPARK Initiative. SPARK brings together leaders in government, nonprofits and the private sector to discuss solutions to better support individuals with I/DD. Content is organized by stakeholder type, geography (states), National Core Indicators (NCI), and specific topics relevant to the user. The site will continue to be updated and optimized based on stakeholder input.
