On July 14, 2020, the HomeCare Advocacy Network (HCAN) announced it was offering a franchised home care option for senior living provider organizations. The HCAN model also allows senior living provider organizations to extend care services off-campus, establishing relationships with families early on in their senior care journey. For franchisees, HCAN provides the training, structure, and system support needed to help communities effectively add home care services to their business. The HCAN model also includes options for individual entrepreneurs who want to purchase a franchise.
HCAN was founded in January 2020. It works with stand-alone franchisees and with senior living provider organizations that wish to add home care services. Its first franchisee began operating in April 2020 to serve residents of Douglas County, Nebraska. HCAN is focusing on the states from Texas to North Dakota, and Wisconsin to Colorado. It also will enter master licensing agreements in Canada, South Korea, and Japan. Baseline requirements for approval to purchase an HCAN franchise are: culture fit for HCAN, appropriate capitalization, and passing a “discovery day” interview with the HCAN corporate team. Both non-profit and for-profit organizations can purchase an HCAN franchise. The franchise initial investment is $45,000, and the full upfront cost ranges from $116,650 to $167,750. The ongoing cost is a 7% royalty fee on gross revenues.
HCAN provides its franchisees with two weeks of training, one in class and one in the field, both operations and business owner manuals, six on-site business development visits in the first three years, and all associated human resources documents for running the business. HCAN also provides brand development services, and assists in providing training for direct-to-consumer assurance. HCAN recommends that its franchisees launch as private-pay organizations; if the franchisee is adequately capitalized, HCAN will help the franchisee become will help its franchisees become a Medicare or Medicaid provider organization.
