Geisinger Medical Center (Geisinger) recently launched a new support group for caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The move makes Geisinger one of only two health systems nationally to offer such a program.

The program, Beyond Alzheimer’s, was initially created by Patti Davis, daughter of former U.S. president Ronald Reagan. By allowing caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s to help other such caregivers prepare for the challenges ahead, they can be better prepared to look after the health of those whom they care for, as well as take better care of themselves. Such programs are of timely importance, as nearly one-third of the population displays symptoms of Alzheimer’s as they age.

Geisinger is an integrated health services organization widely recognized for its innovative use of the electronic health record and the development of innovative care delivery models, such as ProvenHealth Navigator, ProvenCare, and ProvenExperience. As one of the nation’s largest health service organizations, Geisinger serves more than 3 million consumers throughout 45 counties in central, south-central, and northeast Pennsylvania.

This was reported by Williamsport Sun Gazette on April 7, 2019.
