The Council on Aging of Central Oregon (The Council) recently announced it is acquiring Bend’s Community Center. The financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.
The new site will offer five times more interior space than The Council’s current location contains, helping to accommodate service delivery, parking, and staff offices. It is anticipated that this will help The Council to meet an increasing demand in the area for support services for seniors. According to numbers from the United States Census Bureau, the number of adults aged 65 and older in Central Oregon increased by 58 percent from 2010 to 2016, nearly doubling growth rates for all of Oregon during that time period. The new site will offer services such as nutrition programs, information and referral to critical services, options counseling, assistance with Medicare enrollment, in-home care, transportation, caregiver programs, and other services.
The Council on Aging of Central Oregon seeks to meet immediate needs for seniors while encouraging a maximum amount of self-help and independence. Bend’s Community Center seeks to build a strong community by providing resources for basic needs, job training, volunteer opportunities, and a place that brings people together.
