Anthem recently announced it plans to launch an in-house pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) during the second quarter of 2019. PBMs provide third-party administration of prescription drug programs for commercial health plans and other types of health plans.
The new in-house PBM, IngenioRx, will mean that Anthem is terminating its current PBM contract with Express Scripts—a move prompted by Express being acquired by Cigna Corp. in 2018. Anthem members should begin being transferred into IngenioRx over the 12 months following March 1, when the Express contract is officially ended. According to statements from Anthem CEO Gail Boudreaux, IngenioRx will allow the organization to market earlier and with better economics, as well as accelerate its whole-person health strategy.
Anthem Inc. is an American health insurance company founded in the 1940s, known as WellPoint, Inc. prior to 2014. It is the largest for-profit managed health care organization in the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
