Alphabet’s Verily Shelves Glucose-Sensing Contact Lens Project With Novartis
Verily—a subsidiary of Alphabet, Google’s parent company—recently announced it is ending its efforts to create a glucose-sensing contact lens. The project was announced four years ago in collaboration with Novartis subsidiary Alcon.
According to statements from Verily leadership, the organization decided to end the project due to clinical work yielding insufficient consistency in regards to correlation between tear glucose and blood glucose concentrations. Such consistency would have been needed to support the medical device’s requirements. Despite the announcement, Verily will still continue efforts in creating contact lenses for presbyopia and cataract surgery recovery.
