The U.S. Disability Supports & Long-Term Care Market: Eight Million People With Physical Disabilities & $84 Billion In Public Spending

In 2011, public spending on disability supports and long-term care (LTC) for older adults and people with physical disabilities reached $84.4 billion. Of the total, 62% ($52.4 billion) was spent on institutional long-term services and supports (LTSS) and 38% ($32 billion) was spent on community-based (non-institutional) care. The share attributed to non-institutional services is low for individuals with physical disabilities in contrast to the share spent (80%) on non-institutional services for the other primary subpopulation using LTSS—individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities or I/DD.
