Medications are an increasingly important part of the management of chronic conditions. In 2016, prescription drug spending totaled $328.6 billion or 9.8% of the $3.3 trillion in health care spending. Comparatively in 2010, spending on prescription drugs total $253.1 billion or 9.7% of the $2.6 trillion in health care spending. For consumers with behavioral health and cognitive impairment there has been little change in the medications available to treat these conditions.
