Developmental Disabilities More Common In Rural Areas
Developmental disability diagnosis rates are higher in rural areas (19.8%) than in urban areas (17.4%), according to an analysis of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). The NHIS surveyed parents or guardians about whether their child has been diagnosed with and used services for one (or more) of 10 conditions that delay a child's development: attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder, blindness, cerebral palsy, moderate to profound hearing loss, learning disability, intellectual disability, seizures, stuttering or stammering, and other developmental delays.
