COVID-19 Case Rate Among Prisoners Was 5.5 Times Higher Than U.S. Population Case Rate; Death Rate Was 1.3 Times Higher
Cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were 5.5 times higher among prisoners compared to the general population from March 31 to June 6, 2020. Overall, the prison case rate was 3,251 per 100,000 prisoners, while the U.S. case rate was 587 per 100,000 individuals. The COVID-19 death rate among prisoners during this time was 1.3 times as high as the general population rate. The crude COVID-19 death rate in prisons was 39 deaths per 100,000 prisoners, while the general population COVID-19 death rate was 29 deaths per 100,000 . . .
