20% of U.S. Population Had Prescriptions for Mental Health-Related Medications in 2010

In 2010, about 21% of the approximately 164 million Americans with commercial health insurance, were prescribed a mental health-related medication—antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, antipsychotics, or medications to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. A decade earlier, only 17% of insured Americans took mental health-related medications. The prevalence of such prescriptions varied by the individual’s gender and age with most of the increase among occurring among adults.
