Merger & Acquisition Activity in Behavioral Health & Social Service Sector To Accelerate Over Next Three Years

Acquisition demand for behavioral health and social service (BHSS) provider organizations is likely to accelerate between 2010 and 2014. The BHSS sector includes organizations serving individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities, mental health disorders, child welfare or juvenile justice involvement, acquired brain injury, or addiction disorders. Investments in the BHSS sector have increased from less than 20 deals in 2004 to more than 35 in 2010. During the first six months of 2011, 24 deals have been completed. Private equity groups (PEGs) have become interested in the sector, and PEG-sponsored investments have increased from just one in 2004 to 11 in 2010.
