State Mental Health Budgets Cut 5% Since 2009

Between 2009 and 2012, state mental health budgets decreased by an aggregate of five percent. In 2009, states allocated nearly $22.5 billion to state mental health departments; in 2012, states allocated nearly $21.3 billion, resulting in a total loss of $1.2 billion for state-funded mental health services. A total of 29 states made cuts to their mental health budgets that reduced spending by $1.6 billion, while 22 states increased their mental health budgets by $486 million.
