The Value of Personal Health Records
Researchers from the Center for Information Technology Leadership
examined the financial value of four emerging personal health record
(PHR) architectures that include: provider-tethered, payer-tethered, third-party, and
interoperable. These PHR systems provide the functions of information
collection and sharing, information for self-management, and health care
information exchange. The cost of providing interoperable PHRs for 80% of
the U.S. population was estimated at $3.7 billion to initially acquire
the PHR and $1.9 billion annually to maintain. Annual savings of $21
billion due to interoperable PHRs are expected due to efficiencies gained
in transferring information between providers and due to e-visits.
