ShareCMS Approval of West Virginia Medicaid State Plan Amendment

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approved West Virginia's plan to modernize its state Medicaid program. The state intends to implement the plan in three rural counties (Clay, Lincoln, and Upshur) beginning July 1, 2006 and to phase in implementation statewide over four years. Enrollment will begin in the three counties in January 2007.

The state's plan will link a group of expanded benefits to beneficiary compliance with medical plans. To encourage compliance, the state will require that beneficiaries sign a responsibility pledge. People who fail to keep appointments or follow physician instructions will lose access to the expanded benefits.
