Texas DFPS Presentation: Weighting Child Care Licensing
The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) presented
details of a plan to establish weighted child care licensing standards to
improve child safety. The new system will assign each licensing
deficiency a weight ranging from low to high. The weighting will enable
caseworkers to distinguish between standards that are considered
important to child safety and those that present more substantial risk to
children. The data generated by use of the weighted standards will enable
DFPS licensing staff to identify and address trends, disparities, and
risk to children.
The weighted standards will be incorporated into the licensing staffs
decision-making process. Implementation of the new standards will begin
in the fall of 2008. In the summer of 2009, DFPS will design and
implement a quality assurance system to ensure consistency and reduce
variance in licensing actions.
