Results from the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health: Mental Health Findings

In 2009, an estimated 45.1 million adults over age 18 experienced mental illness; of those, 11 million had a serious mental illness (SMI). The 45.1 million represented about 19.9% of the entire United States population of about 229 million adults, with SMI being 4.8%.
