SharePrepared Remarks of Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey at the National Association of Attorneys General Winter Meeting

United States Attorney General, Michael B. Mukasey highlighted three areas of cooperation between state and federal law enforcement. A key topic was increased state reporting of mental illness records to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

As of June 2007, only 23 states reported individuals with records of mental illness that would render the individual ineligible to purchase a gun. Thirty-two states now transmit this information. Attorney General
Mukasey said he would like to see all states transmit this information. He called on states to enhance their laws.

He noted that the overall number of mental health records submitted by states have increased for two reasons. More states are reporting, and states that had been reporting have begun providing more records. He said that Ohio increased its records from "a handful" to more than 7,000.
