 The Nonprofit Sector in Brief: Facts & Figures From the Nonprofit
Almanac 2007
Approximately 1.4 million nonprofit organizations are registered
with the IRS. When compared to other sectors of the economy, the
non-profit sector accounts for 5.2% of gross domestic product and
8.3% of wages and salaries paid in the United States.
In 2005, individuals, corporations, and foundations gave $260
billion in charitable contributions to nonprofits. About 29% of
Americans volunteered their time through a formal organization.
