ShareAmericans With Disabilities: 2005

The report classifies disabilities as either severe or non-severe, and provides analysis of the numbers by gender, age, race, and specific disability. The researchers only included data from civilian, non-institutionalized individuals; the disability statuses of people living in group institutional settings, such as nursing homes were not included.

Approximately 54 million U.S. residents ? 19% of the population reported some level of disability in 2005. Of those, more than 16 million people reported difficulty with cognitive, mental, or emotional functioning, including 8.4 million with one or more disabilities that interfere with daily activities. Overall, 35 million Americans are classified as having a severe disability, which includes 4.7 million children ages six to 14.
