ShareWomen, Co-Occurring Disorders and Violence Study and Children's Subset Study (WCDVS) by SAMHSA

This is a 5 year study of 2,000 women with co-occurring mental and substance abuse disorders and trauma histories. It was conducted to generate knowledge about the effectiveness of comprehensive, integrated service models for women.

It concludes that women with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders are likely to have more severe difficulties and need services more often than women who do not have co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders. However, most service delivery systems meet only one need at a time, which leaves the women inadequately treated.

The study was followed up with a subset study of the effects of inadequate treatment of mothers with co-occurring disorders on their children. The study concludes that children whose mothers needed but did not get treatment for their complex disorders tended to have more adjustment and long-term difficulties.
