DRAFT: Policies & Practices to Look for From Organizations That Collect
Your Personal Health Information: A Consumer Checklist
To aid policy discussions on the secondary use of consumer data, on
October 3, 2007, the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA)
submitted several documents relating to secondary uses of consumer health
data to the American Health Information Community, Office of the National
Coordinator, and the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics.
The documents included a taxonomy of the uses and users of secondary
health data, which includes categories and classes of secondary uses of
health data; a definition of data stewardship, and a consumer checklist
regarding on-line health web sites. The documents are intended to provide
a framework for AHIP, ONC, and NCVHS to formulate their recommendations
to the Secretary of the federal Department of Health and Human Services.
The consumer checklist provides 12 questions consumers should ask of
organizations that collect their personal health information.
