ShareCalifornia Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation Detailed Long-Range Plan to Improve Prison Mental Health Services

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) was required to file a detailed long-range plan, including activation schedules, to increase mental health treatment and housing capacity. The filing is in response to a September 24, 2009, court order in Coleman v. Schwarzenegger, a class action lawsuit protesting the lack of adequate mental health care in CDCR facilities. This long-range plan projects treatment capacity needs through 2013 based on projections made in the spring of 2009. Ultimately, CDCR plans to add about 2,600 new treatment beds by continuing some projects that have already started, new construction, and remodeling or repurposing other facilities and areas.
