ShareIntel Reader Brochure

Intel's Digital Health Group debuted the Intel Reader, a Linux-based hand-held device that scans text and converts it to speech. The device costs about $1,500, weighs about one pound, and is about the size of a paperback book; it comes with earphones for private listening and operates on rechargeable batteries. In addition to scanning and converting text, it plays most audio content including MP3, DAISY* digital talking books, and text files transferred from a computer. Intel is targeting the device for people with dyslexia, low vision, blindness, or other conditions that can make reading printed text difficult or impossible.
