November 2005
National Telehealth Value Study
The National Telehealth Value Study, conducted by Strategic
Healthcare Programs, LLC, (SHP) and sponsored by Honeywell
HomMed, looked at how home telemonitoring return-on-investment
could be calculated and used by home health providers. In the
study, Honeywell HomMed provided various home agency sites across
the country with the telemonitoring equipment and clinical
training necessary to complete the study. The study was
conducted between June 1, 2005 and November 30, 2005, and included a
sample of 1,027 patients at 32 sites.
The results revealed hospital utilization rates that were less than
expected for the monitored groups. Eleven of the 18 participating
agencies experienced emergency care rates below the Centers for
Medicare and Medicaid Services risk-adjusted scored for emergent
care utilization for a similar patient mix. Of the 678 patients with
a primary or secondary diagnosis of dyspnea, improvement averaged
63.5% in the non-monitored groups; total average improvement in the
monitored group was 69.1%. Of the 819 patients that had the
opportunity to improve in ambulation, on average 39.2% of the
non-monitored patients experienced improvement. On average, 45.6% of
the monitored groups experienced improvements.
