June 2006
U.S. Healthcare Industry HIPAA Compliance Survey Results: Summer
2006
This semi-annual survey was conducted by the Healthcare Information
and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and Phoenix Health Systems to
monitor and report on industry compliance with the requirements of
the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) as
an informational and educational service. The survey has been
conducted every six months since 2000. The focus has been expanded
to explore the direct and indirect impacts of HIPAA,
post-implementation.
Key findings include:
-
Provider and payer organizations have made little progress in
security initiatives since the winter 2006 survey conducted in
January
-
56% of provider organizations have implemented the security
standards, compared to 55% in January 2006
-
80% of payer organizations compared to the 72% that reported
compliance in January 2006
-
Despite claims of full compliance with the Security Rule, gaps
remain; many compliant provider organizations and payer
organizations could not confirm
that they had implemented all key security standards
Data security breaches remain a serious reality for both provider
organizations and
payer organizations; 39% of provider organizations and 33% of payer
organizations reported having experienced security incidents in
the last six months. These percentages are consistent with those
reported in the January 2006 Survey. |
