Coverage Denials for Pre-Existing Conditions in the Individual Health Insurance Market
On October 12, 2010, the U.S. House of Representatives, Committee on Energy and Commerce released
the findings of a congressional investigation of four large insurers about their coverage denials for
people with pre-existing conditions seeking individual health insurance policies.
The review found that Aetna Inc., Humana Inc., UnitedHealth Group Inc. and WellPoint Inc., found that together, they denied coverage
to more than 651,000 people over the three-year period, about one in every
seven applications. Collectively the companies covered 2.8 million people in the
individual health insurance market in 2009.
