ShareOhio State House Passes Bill (HB 213) on Foster Caregiver Fingerprint Database

On May 8, 2007, Ohio State Representative Jeff Wagner introduced a bill to clarify when a court must order a potential foster parent to be fingerprinted and to establish a retained applicant fingerprint database in order to improve foster parent background checks. The bill also mandates the director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services to convene a work group to advise him on following the provisions of the act.

The bill passed the state house on June 26, 2007, and was sent to the Senate. The state senate passed a similar bill, (SB 163) dealing with the reporting of criminal activity of current or potential foster parents which is currently under consideration in the house. Both of these bills were spurred by the August 2006 death of a developmentally disabled boy at the hands of his foster parents.
