North Carolina House Bill 625: an Act to Rename Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services Facilities
This law called for renaming several service facilities to clarify their functions. The hospitals will now be referred to as:
-
Psychiatric hospitals for people with mental
illness
-
Developmental centers for people with mental
retardation and developmental disabilities
-
Alcohol and drug treatment centers for people
with substance abuse disorders
-
Neuro-medical treatment centers for special care
of people with co-morbid mental health disorders and developmental
disabilities
This law also establishes the Whitaker and
Wright Schools as residential programs for children and notes the closing
of the Dorothea Dix Hospital, which previously served psychiatric
patients. A new class of facility will enable Division of Mental Health,
Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services to develop specialized services for people with co-occurring disorders. The new facilities are:
-
Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center in Black Mountain
-
Longleaf Neuro-Medical Treatment (formerly the North Carolina Special Care Center) in Wilson
-
O'Berry Neuro-Medical Treatment in Goldsboro
