October 2006
Sources of Health Insurance & Characteristics of the Uninsured:
Analysis of the March 2006 Current Population Survey
Based on estimates from the U.S. Census Bureaus March 2006 Current
Population Survey (CPS), it reflects 2005 data. It also discusses
trends in coverage for the 19942005 period and highlights
demographic characteristics that typically indicate whether an
individual is insured. The key finding is that employer-based health
insurance rates have declined since 2000; this has increased the
number of uninsured people. The level of public health insurance
provided by Medicaid or State Children's Health Insurance Programs
has not changed during the same period of time. The result is that
more people lack health insurance.
The following demographic characteristics were associated with
having health insurance:
-
Full-time employment
-
Employment in manufacturing or in public sector agencies
-
Employment in a firm with more than 100 employees
-
Managerial or or professional work
