October 2001
2001 Profile of Health
Care Compliance Officers
Program Growth and Maturity
Corporate compliance programs virtually
unheard of until 1997 are now standard in health care
organizations. The programs are becoming more common, better known
and larger in terms of number of employees and budgets. Since
1999, the percentage of health care organizations with active
compliance programs in place has increased from 55% to 80%, and
budgets have increased by over 10%. Along with this has come
growth in the Corporate Compliance Officer (CCO) position.
Compared to just a few years ago, a CCO is better educated,
receives higher compensation, and is a more integral part of a
health care organization.
These are a few of the results of the Health
Care Compliance Association's 2001 Profile of Health Care
Compliance Officers. The HCCA has been tracking the field's
progress by conducting an annual survey since 1998. Last year we
reported that health care compliance programs were just beginning
to mature. It appears that maturation is nearly complete today.
Compliance Program Issues and Trends
The introduction of HIPAA Privacy Regulation has
presented a challenge to compliance programs across the country.
Sixty-two percent of the survey respondents say HIPAA compliance
is the biggest issue facing their program today. This is followed
by monitoring/auditing (50%), education/training (37%) and
compliance with government regulations (36%). Last year's No. 1
issue was program development/implementation (at 66%); just 29%
say it is their top issue in 2001.
