Income, Poverty & Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2006
The U.S. Census Bureau, in its latest report on income, poverty, and
health insurance, estimates that there were 47 million Americans without
health insurance in 2006. These persons account for nearly 16% of the
population and represent a 16% increase over the 2005 number of 44.8
million. Likewise, the number of uninsured children increased from 8
million to 8.7 million, or nearly 11% of the population.
Despite this, however, the real median household income increased between
2005 and 2006 and the poverty rate decreased by 0.3%. The survey also
found that the South had the highest rate of uninsured persons (19%)
while the Midwest had the lowest (11.4%). Among minority groups,
Hispanics were most likely to be uninsured.
