The TEDS Report: Frequency of Use Among Alcohol-Only Treatment
Admissions: 2006
In 2006, about 2% of Americans used alcohol on a
daily or nearly daily basis, according to the National Survey on Drug Use
and Health conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration. This report focuses on the 394,000 alcohol-only treatment
admissions to the Treatment Episode Data Set in 2006, in order to explore the
possible correlates of frequency of alcohol use without the potentially
confounding effects of additional substances of abuse.
Key findings included:
-
49% of alcohol-only treatment admissions
reporting daily use were referred to treatment by themselves, a family
member, or a friend
-
55% of alcohol-only treatment admissions
reporting less than daily use were referred to treatment by the criminal
justice system
-
41% who reported daily use were more
likely to say they were "not in the labor force" and only 20% were
employed full time
-
24% who reported less frequent use said they
were "not in the labor force" and 41% were employed full time
-
26% of those reporting daily use were homeless;
nine percent of those reporting less frequent use were homeless
