 Letter From American Psychological Association to National Register
About Continuing Education Credits
This letter from American Psychological Association (APA) executive
director of education Dr. Cynthia Belar specifies the APA change in
position about the evaluation of programs training psychologists in
psychopharmacology. The four key points are:
- Instructional coursework should be administered for academic credit
- Instruction must be through a regionally-accredited institution of
higher learning; the APA sponsor approval system is not an
accrediting mechanism for this type of instruction
- Psychologists should have medical and psychopharmacological
knowledge before beginning postdoctoral training
- Programs seeking to provide this training should be an organized and
coordinated program of instruction with faculty and facilities
