2007 Survey of Foster Parents and Caregivers In Washington State
Authored by John Tarnai and Rose Krebill-Prather, this report discusses the findings of a survey conducted by the Washington State University's Social and
Economic Sciences Research Center (SERC) that gathered information about Washington State caregivers' experiences to ensure they are getting the training
and support they need. A total of 1,234 caregivers statewide were interviewed by telephone between April and July 2007. The questionnaire included over 150
questions and results were used to measure performance related to eight of the Braam Implementation Plan measures. The results indicate a high level of
compliance with 5 out of the 8 measures. Specifically, the survey found the majority of caregivers receive the respite care they need, caregivers are treated
professionally and with respect, children needing mental health services are receiving it in a timely manner, licensed caregivers receive adequate training,
support, and information about the needs of children placed with them, caregivers received adequate support in caring for medically fragile children, and
caregivers received behavioral health services from the same individual provider. Areas for improvement are also identified and include unmet training needs and
dissatisfaction with agency communication.
