ShareCMS's Special Focus Facility Methodology Should Better Target the Most Poorly Performing Homes, Which Tended to Be Chain Affiliated & For-Profit

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) reviewed the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Special Focus Facility (SFF) methodology for identifying and tracking poorly performing nursing homes. Because CMS has structured the SFF program so that each state has at least one SFF, the GAO recommended that CMS refine the SFF methodology, to consider the SFF's relative performance nationally and identify the worst performing homes in the nation.
