ShareStipulation for Injunctive Relief: Ohio Department of Youth Services Settlement

The settlement between the Ohio Department of Youth Services (DYS) and child advocacy organizations in Ohio settles issues with the treatment of youth in juvenile correctional facilities. The document outlines a number of items that are meant to help rectify youth issues.

The settlement includes the following stipulations, among others:

  • Creating a plan through the DYS task force that allows juvenile offenders to remain in the community whenever possible, while reducing the use of institutional facilities

  • Making sure youth are always placed in the least restrictive environment possible for receiving treatment

  • Individualizing treatment for youth

  • Encouraging the involvement of families in the youths treatment process

  • Designing education around the youths pace, while providing adequate assessment for progress

  • Creating a more effective grievance system that removes fear and intimidation from the process
